What is growth hacking and What does a growth hacker do ?

Hey buddy are you SEO! ? But how come you are @ senior position in first Job.

I shocked later i realized and told him it’s not Sr Executive officer..its Search Engine Optimization work.  

In India: SEO, Digital marketing, Social Media Marketing was not known for many… Nowadays i feel almost every Organisation knows its benefits, even Political parties.


From my head: The Future of Marketing is “Growth Hacking” . Growth hacking is new concepts for any business/startups.

Its a new buzz word which is roaming inside the mind of any kind of marketers. most of them are SEO, Social Media or Digital Marketing Guys.

So what is Growth Hacking ?

A/c to wiki: Growth hacking is a marketing technique developed by technology startups which use creativity, analytical thinking, and social metrics to sell products and gain exposure.

A/c to kissmetrics: At many technology companies, traditional marketing roles are transforming into growth hacking roles. In fact, the work has become so popular now that some companies are hiring “growth hackers “. Different from marketers, who traditionally are less technical, growth hackers have one objective – to grow the company.

Gagan Biyani, the co-founder of Udemy and a growth hacker himself, said, “many of the growth hacking descriptions on the web are unnecessarily restrictive. I don’t believe growth hackers must be formal engineers when many of the most well-regarded growth hackers don’t code regularly.” A growth hacker usually needs a programmer on his team, but he doesn’t have to be the programmer.

Now, What does a growth hacker do ?

I tell you 2 short story.

1st: There is a school since 25 yrs which have almost 500 students.. but due to lack on knowledge the school could not become big. The director’s focus was just to make money without enhancements. the same way, there are many good online education institutions which have million students and too they got in few yrs. what i can say here the school might have got traditional marketers and online institutes have got Growth Hackers.

2nd: There is small kirana store [ Grocery shop ] in Bangalore since 15 yrs, but couldn’t open its new shop. may be its owner is happy with little or may be he or she is following traditional marketing to grow its business. but if you can look up @ Big Bazaar, Reliance Fresh..they have spread all over the India in just few yrs.even they have come up online. its all because of hatke[thought different style of marketing] of traditional marketing.

So, even Neil Patel Says: You don’t have to be a programmer to be a growth hacker. Traditional marketers can become growth hackers if they narrow their focus and deepen their skill set.


Founders : “Ok how can we get people to try our company?”
Growth Hackers : “Make stuff that people want.”

Then they’ll do the marketing for us [in free].

Growth hackers just sits and think of Growth only. Jobs and Responsibilities are:

GH sits almost alone or with few similar kind of people.

GH will directly work with Designer, programmer, tester, top management team.

GH will try to implement impossible things with the help of programmers.

How can we get awareness, attention or Brand name easily ?

How can we get particular users ? GH always think of actual users who can signup and buy products.

They throw out traditional way of marketing practices and implement new tricks after doing research, testing.

They make use of SEO, Digital/Internet Marketing , Social Media Marketing, Adwords, PPC, Review Blogs, Influencers marketing, API etc..

They are single decision makers for any startups.

A good technical growth hacker should always be asking “how can this be automated”. A good non-technical growth hacker should always be asking their technical partner “would it be possible to…?”.

They think from customer eyes, means what their customers wants from them. Think More From Your Customers, Not More Customers.

It actually works and you can track it.

You can take an example of  marketing at any startup, you will learn a lot about Growth Hacking Process. Growth hackers are extremely analytical, creative and also right brained. Its not a difficult or having a particular strategy to follow process .. its all a Mindset.
